Would they give me far less than the website quote, revise down the weight I'd given, tell me my gold was not up to scratch, take ages to make the payment? The Carat is a measure of the purity of gold. As a measure of purity, one carat is one twenty-fourth purity by weight;
Therefore 24-carat gold is pure gold (99.99%), 18-carat gold is 75% purity, 12-carat gold is 50% purity, etc.

The most common carats used for gold in bullion and jewellery are:

24 carat (fineness 999/1000)
22 carat (fineness 916/1000)
20 carat (fineness 833/1000)

Platinum:

Our values for Platinum are calculated in two ways.

There is a pure platinum which is 0.9999 purity, which normally comes in the form of bars. Then there is a platinum which is used to make jewellery, and this purity is normally 0.950, as this has some alloys to give it extra strength in the form of jewellery.

Silver:

The way we calculate our Silver prices is based on the purity of Silver. 0.9999 is pure Silver, and this normally is supplied in clean bars. Most Silver for jewellery making is 0.925 purity. But we also offer prices for 0.835 and 0.850 Silver, as there is a lot of Silver that is produced in Germany and East Europe which tends to be of this purity.
